May 11, Robin Hoods Bay This is one of the first places many people come to along the Yorkshire Coast, but most come back with nothing, unless they know where and what to look for. The middle of the bay consists of boulder clay, but either side can be quite productive. You will find a footpath at the top of the hill, to the left of the main street leading to the beach. This winds round and passes a picnic area.
To do this, go down into the main street at the bottom of the hill and follow round to the right. You will see some steps, which follow the sea defence and lead to the shore.

As sea levels rose, the river valley became flooded, and the chalk ridge line west of the Needles breached to form the island. At that time the sea level was much lower and carts of tin were brought across the Solent at low tide for export, possibly on the Ferriby Boats. Anthony Snodgrass suggests that a shortage of tin, as a part of the Bronze Age Collapse and trade disruptions in the Mediterranean around BC, forced metalworkers to seek an alternative to bronze.
Trade however continued as evidenced by the remarkable local abundance of European Iron Age coins. From then onwards, there are indications that the island had wide trading links, with a port at Bouldnor , evidence of Bronze Age tin trading, and finds of Late Iron Age coins.

The Isle of Wight is almost the smallest county in the country after Rutland. The Romans called the Island Vectis. The derivation cannot be established with certainty but the name is probably of British origin and may be connected with the Welsh gwaith work the Latin Vectis lever which share a common root. It has been suggested that Wight could mean what has been raised i. All the three flow north and drain into the Solent or Spithead.
West Wight is, in fact, almost an Island in its own right, since the West Yar rises only a few hundred metres inland from Freshwater bay. The exact centre of the Island is at Shide Corner, on the south-eastern outskirts of Newport. The highest point is St.

Once open to the sea, tidal scouring widened the Solent. The island has no visible Paleolithic or Mesolithic Middle Stone Age sites, but flints from these periods have been found and are on display at Carisbrooke Castle. Neolithic[ edit ] There are theories that, during the Neolithic era , Bouldnor was a seaport that traded with the Middle East , or that nomadic gatherers roamed over wider areas than previously thought, because wheat was present there 8, years ago, hundreds if not thousands of years before it is known to have been grown in northern Europe.
The coins and ingots from these hoards had been defaced before burial, for reasons that are unknown; this feature has only been found in coin finds from Hampshire and Wight. One plough-damaged barrow on Gallibury Down was excavated during and dated to between BCE. There is also evidence from aerial photographs of ring ditches the remains of barrows on the limestone near Bembridge. The only significant Iron Age find is at Chillerton Down, where there was a hill fort.

Description[ edit ] Studland is sited in the lee of Ballard Down , close to the east-facing Studland Bay, a 2. Although a coastal village, the houses in Studland are mostly sited a few hundred metres inland. At the start of the twentieth century Sir Frederick Treves described the village as “a medley of country lanes, lost among trees, with a few thatch-roofed cottages dotted about in a wild garden of brambles, ferns, and gorse. In the 17th century there began a process of sand accumulation in the bay and along the South Haven Peninsula stretching north, resulting in natural land reclamation and the creation or expansion of the bay’s beaches and its psammosere sand dune system.

The Lepe Country Park is on the cliff top above. At the back of the beach, and below the level of the cliff top, there are toilets, a cafe and a shop, useful facilities. The western part of the low, shore car park was not originally a beach but it was formerly the location where the Dark Water stream flowed out to sea. This stream now flows out just east of the Watch House and there is a road bridge accross it. This remained the situation until early in the 19th century when a new opening was made in about the middle of the valley.
The old, former eastern opening near Stone Point, had, earlier, been the result of deflection of the stream channel by flint shingle moving eastward, i. Examination of old maps suggest that this would have taken place in the 18th century or before. The deflection might well have been associated with the great hurricane of Daniel Defoe’s “Storm”. The former site of the stream channel is the low ground where the cafe, shop and toilets are now situated.
At Stone Point the coast turns seaward forming in a small, curved, gentle promontary.
